Working in the dental industry (although not being a dentist, dental assistant or hygienist myself), the most dramatic whitening results are with either home whitening kits (where you have moulds made of your teeth by your dentist and you apply a gel containing a high concentration of hydrogen peroxide) or in-office whitening (using gel which is “cured” with a light device of some kind — itvaries according to manufacturer). Your dentist will explain the procedures and possible side effects)
Some OTC products (ie. Whitestrips) may work for some people, but not to the same degree as a professional whitening. I once used that home bleaching gel Kim Alexis used to do infomercials for, and I had decent results.
Whitening toothpastes, and even hydrogen peroxide from the drugstore, do not have a high enough concentration of peroxide, nor do they stay on the teeth long enough, to actually make a significant difference. In fact, regular toothpastes are just as effective.
NOTE: Not everyone will have Chicklet-white teeth. Some teeth have a white cast, some a yellow cast & some a grey cast. In addition, everyone’s body chemistry is different. As such, the final colour will vary. If you want a Hollywood smile, but can’t get it through whitening, veneers are your only other option.
As well, if you plan on getting dental work done (ie. crowns, bridges, partial dentures, veneers, white restorations) and you are thinking of whitening your teeth as well, whiten them FIRST so that the colours of new dental work will match. If you do afterward, they won’t.
