Metal Mouth Message Board :: View topic
jrbecca I recommend you check this one out with your ortho and/or dentist before doing anything.
The main issue is you don’t want the area exposed around the cement to become ‘whiter or more bleached’ that the area under the cement … or your teeth will look horrible when your braces come off.
I’ve found that using whitening toothpaste (which does not contain any bleach) is great for keeping my teeth the colour they were when my brackets were put on. I eat a lot of staining foods (curry addict etc), so my teeth have never been white … but they were cleaned before I had my braces put on, so I want them that shade. The colour of my teeth is looking good. I use Colgate with Baking Soda and Peroxide as my main toothpaste, I also use Sensadoyne Whitening toothpase once a day.
I’ve read on here that many ortho’s tell you not to use whitening toothpaste or whitening mouth wash. My ortho’s view is that there’s not enough ingredients in whitening toothpaste to actually whiten your teeth. If there was, there’d be no need for the many commercially sold ‘whitening’ products. He added that even if there was, toothpaste does not stay in contact with your tooth long enough to do any whitening. I trust him … and am cool with his suggestions!
Have you been back to your dentist for a cleaning since being braced. Some people on this board have had a thing called a ‘baking soda spray clean’ … well that’s not it’s real name … but it’s when they spray a mixture that contains baking soda on your teeth. They say they’re happy with the results. I think it’s recommended you see your dentist every six months while in treatment, but some people go for cleaning more frequently than that.
Good luck with finding out what your ortho and/or dentist recommend.
