postheadericon What’s the best way to keep your teeth white?

As Kim Siever already pointed out, you should avoid certain types of food and beverage products.

Most important: BRUSH REGULARLY! Brush in the morning, after every meal, and before you go to sleep. Use a flouride rinse in the morning and at night…I personally use Listerine in the morning, and before I go to bed, I rinse thoroughly with ‘Act’, a fluoride product distributed by Reach that is highly effective at preventing cavities and destroying harmful germs in the mouth.

FLOSS REGULARLY! Get rid of all those food particles and other nasties that hide in the grooves between your teeth. You don’t need to use a mint-waxed floss…any type of floss will do. There are even floss aids and electric floss tools that will help get the job done.

USE FLOURIDE RINSE! As I stressed earlier in my advice to Brush Regularly, fluoride rinses such as Listerine and Act are extremely helpful in preventing tooth decay and cavity forming. Use a rinse like Listerine after every meal, and use a Fluoride rinse like Act at night before you go to bed…the effects are outstanding.

Drink water and milk…both are healthy alternatives to soda and other such soft drinks. Milk promotes healthy teeth and bones, and water is naturally clean and doesn’t normally contain detrimental bacteria or additives that can harm your teeth.

Avoid these…or at least seriously cutback on them!!

Coffee – horrible for your teeth. Can easily stain and potentially rot teeth.

Chocolate – like coffee, the dark and rich texture of certain types of chocolate can wear away and discolor the tooth enamel. The high sugar content also leads to cavities and rotting if not properly brushed.

Hard candy – bitng down on hard candies and other hard, difficult to chew foods can cause fractures, breaks and chipping in teeth. Over time the foundation of the tooth can weaken and it will have to be removed.

Soda – just as bad for your teeth as it is for your stomach, your weight, and many other physical attributes. Soda rots and discolors teeth, and though you may not realize it, dark colas will stick to your teeth long after you drink and continue to do their dirty work. Soda is one of the worst things for your teeth, period. Clear sodas don’t get off the hook either…they’re just as bad if not worse for your teeth than some darker colas. Exotically colored colas, like blue, red, green, etc (Jones Soda, etc.) are especially harmful.

Smoking – aside from all the other examples of bad health smoking causes, tobacco and smoke will stain and weaken teeth. Chewing tobacco in particular can very quickly cause discoloration and rot…think of those old West movies where the crazy old drunk in the bar with one or two black teeth is spitting into a bucket…more factual than you would think…

Alcohol – particularly strong alcohols can damage teeth and irritate cavities, and contribute to tooth decay.

Gum – sugar gums such as Juciy Fruit and Bubble Yum are wonderful ways to destroy your teeth…unlike many of the gums that are designed specifically to be chewed after meals and promote clean, healthy teeth, these sugar-based gums go to work on your teeth in the same way that soda or candy items do…wearing down your teeth with concentrated sugars.
